Nightime simulation
Shooting for Exposure Marine at the RNLI Training College in Poole, Dorset, the brief was to simulate the experience of a man overboard situation on a dark, stormy night. The pool there has a wave simulator and blinds that can achieve a complete blackout. That would have presented a few problems for photography but we discovered that by leaving one blind open by a few inches we got a little light across the surface that did a great impression of moonlight. The guy in the water is just visible which is the effect we were after for the 'before' image, the 'after' image showed the casualty illuminated by their amazing MOB light.

Batteries...
Almost all the equipment used on a day to day basis is reliant on battery power and some of it uses technology that's now been left way behind. My Lumedyne location flash is used fairly infrequently (you can usually plug in somewhere) but occasionally is invaluable. The system is almost agricultural in its simplicity but the biggest problem has always been the NiCad batteries; replacing them is extremely expensive and they need to be charged correctly. I've just had a couple of them rejuvenated by recellyourbattery.com, excellent helpful service and a reasonable cost to prolong the life of the system.
